Flat Earth Fun

Flat Earth theorists have been growing in number for years. The idea of a flat Earth has been around for a long time, like the hollow earth and that ginger pirates brought bad luck to ships.

Why don’t we give the Flat Earth a try? Why not hear what it has to say?

Let’s jump right in!

Okey dokey. Good question. Not a proof of flat earth, but it is used to support their claim that the sun and moon are the same object (It’s crazy right?).

The Sun’s radius is 696e+6 m, the moon’s 1.7e+6 m (these can be calculated by yourself at home with a pinhole).

The distance from the Sun to Earth is 149.6e+9 m, the moon’s distance to Earth is 384.4e+6 m (these can be measured also at home using parallax).

(FYI: e+ means x10^, a quick way of writing standard form.)

Carrying out these practicals alone proves they are completely different sizes, and not the same object, but let’s make sure these numbers add up.

Here’s the written proof of why both the Sun and Moon look roughly the same size:

Bear in mind that our orbit is elliptical, and that the moon’s orbit is elliptical. The size of the moon and sun will vary by a small amount.

To whoever made this: are these your pictures? If they were, you would have noticed that the clouds were not actually behind the sun when you looked with your own eyes.

This occurrence happens in photographs. A camera can only take in so much light, and pointing it directly at the sun definitely exceeds these limits. The sun’s light over-saturates the image and washes out all clouds and objects in front of it, except very thick clouds like above.

The rocket isn’t pushing the atmosphere, it pushes the fuel. Why would we be using tonnes of fuel, weighing the rocket down, if we’re not going to use it?

Work is being done pushing the fuel outwards in space. By Newton’s 3rd law, the fuel experiences a force, pushing it away, and the rocket experiences an equal and opposite force, pushing it forwards.

Your example of a rocket going into space actually proves the 3rd law. Congrats!

Photoshop, and the blue light scattered in the sky is in front of the moon.

The concept of gravity is difficult for some to grasp. The Earth’s mass is incredibly huge, which creates the gravitational force everything on earth experiences. Pictures such as lakes, pools, and cups are too small to take into account the curvature of Earth. Although human eyes cannot see this far, seawater does in fact curve.

Have a look at this cropped photo:

You can’t see through the surface’s curve, so naturally you can’t see the bottom of the buildings. The ground level in invisible to the camera because the globe is curving downwards.

The orange person (left) can’t see as much of the tower as the blue person (right). This can easily be explained by a curved plane, but not with a flat plane.

Although, some flat-Earthers have gone to fantastic measures to find photos showing a different view.

Newsflash: it’s not. It would be very difficult reproducing this photo. Even the photographer explained that this a photo of a super-mirage. Chicago isn’t visible from his position normally; it is below sea level, but during this mirage it looks like it’s at sea level.

Please don’t go around spreading this to brainwash people.

Okay. There’s loads of proof using centrifugal and gravitational acceleration, so I’ll be trying a more visual explanation. The Earth rotates 360 degrees in 24 hours. That’s 15 degrees per hour. Thus, every second we rotate 0.00416 degrees (or 0.0000726 radians).

Try rotating a wet tennis ball 0.00416 degrees a second. You won’t be able to since your hand can’t move such a small amount with such accuracy. And on top of that, the ball will be moving too slow for any water to be shaken off.

And lastly, my personal favourite:

You figure this one out 😉
